Textron believes protecting our employees and the environment in which we live is much more than just "the right thing to do." It's good business. And this belief has become part of our culture.
Through the development of worldwide enterprise EHS goals, along with a comprehensive EHS management system, our employees continue to move successfully closer to our ultimate vision; zero. Zero injuries and zero adverse environmental impacts.
Of course, it takes more than just comprehensive systems and goals to achieve an injury free culture; it takes talented people at all levels of the enterprise to turn those systems and goals into reality. With robust training programs, dedicated employees, and a strong safety culture, our vision is within reach.
The Textron Total Recordable Injury Rate has improved 69 percent since 2000 and the Lost Time Injury Rate has improved by 59 percent during the same period. Our environmental goal is to eliminate adverse environmental impacts, and we are driving improvements with Textron's Six Sigma and Lean tools. For information about our performance, please visit the Environment, Health and Safety Annual Report.
In 2008, Textron is continuing to develop and implement important EHS strategies that will define our future.
First, the Textron EHS Management System, an internal EHS-specific management system similar to other recognized international systems, is getting a new look. It has served as a foundation for much of the great improvement we have experienced over the last 10 years, and through an extensive review of our internal stakeholders, we have decided to make a complete system revision. By 2009, all of our businesses will be operating under the new system, which will include more of a focus on EHS culture, product safety, and employee health and wellness just to name a few.
Also in 2008, we are continuing to develop Textron’s environmental strategy. We recognize that sustainability is more than just a buzz word, and we have recently selected important environmental metrics to help us understand our global environmental impact. Our next immediate goal to develop systems and techniques for collecting environmental data from our facilities and eventually be able to set objectives and targets for energy reduction, carbon footprint, and others. Although zero adverse environmental impacts will always remain a core commitment, we believe additional transparency in other areas is critical to remain competitive and to help us prepare for inevitable environmental regulations worldwide.
Finally, using important concepts like Human Performance Improvement, we are developing a company-wide incident investigation process that helps us understand how the individual worker makes decisions based on the systems we implement and maintain. More importantly, we are able to discover where in fact our systems have the potential to create opportunity for employee incidents, and institute preventive actions to keep them from ever occurring. It’s an important step in our quest for zero.
Textron is committed to the health and safety of its employees, contractors, and communities. We will actively champion environmentally sound practices and safe behaviors. We will continuously improve our processes, require individual accountability, and demonstrate leadership to achieve an injury and illness free workplace, to eliminate adverse environmental impacts, and to contribute positively to the communities in which we operate.
