The 2008 Chairman’s Award for Innovation winners with Textron Chairman & CEO Lewis B. Campbell |
A product that safely detects the presence of AC voltage in an outlet, lighting fixture or wire without an electrician or homeowner having to come into direct physical contact with the circuit.
A program successfully recruits talented young engineering graduates to Textron through a “boot camp,” a weeklong experience that creates a bond between the company and the students.
An acoustic gunfire detection system that detects gunshots, locates the shooter and can be integrated with an armored vehicle’s remote weapon system keeps soldiers safe in battle.
Three very different issues. Three very different solutions. What they have all have in common is innovation by Textron employees. They were among the 13 projects honored last month with Chairman’s Awards for Innovation by Chairman and CEO Lewis B. Campbell at the Roger Williams Park Casino in Providence. This was the ninth year of the awards.
The winning projects spanned Textron’s businesses and represented a range of products and processes. Each winning innovation led to significant and measurable improvements in Textron’s products, technology or business practice that helped drive the company forward and make its customers more successful.
“Our winners tonight provide very visible examples of how to be innovative and how innovation can drive results,” Campbell told the audience of winners, their guests, Textron’s Board of Directors and other leaders.
“They embody the spirit of innovation we need to harness as an organization. The world continues to move at a breakneck pace, and I believe that innovation and initiative will provide the major push to put us ahead of the competition.”
There were 166 nominations submitted for this year’s award from locations around the world. Of that number, 34 finalists were selected and a committee selected the 13 winning innovations.
The 13 winning innovations represent a total of 51 individuals, including 11 women, the highest number of female winners in the history of the awards, Campbell noted.
Each winner receives a $5,000 cash prize, a trophy, a lapel pin and their name permanently displayed on the Chairman’s Award Wall of Fame in the lobby of Textron’s World Headquarters in Providence.
