A Radio Frequency Identification tag is integrated directly into plastic containers so they can be tracked. |
Kautex has been honored with the German Packaging Award by the German Packaging Institute for its “intelligent” packaging system, a new product that integrates a microchip directly into a plastic bottle or canister during the manufacturing process.
The microchip – a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag – is integrated directly into the plastic canister or bottle during the manufacturing process so it cannot be altered or removed. Both the RFID tag and the Kautex product – whether a canister or bottle – are not susceptible to chemical, thermal or weathering effects.
Depending on the needs of the customers, the RFID tag can contain useful data about the contents within the package such as price, material or manufacturing date. The tag can also be encrypted for additional security, according to Dieter Studener, the vice president of industrial products, information technology and business process management for Kautex.
The product equipped with the RFID tag can be tracked throughout the life of the product – from the time that it is packaged until it reaches its intended recipient – making it especially useful for applications within the pharmaceutical, chemical or food services industries.
The jury of the German Packaging Institute praised Kautex for developing a packaging solution that allowed for both traceability throughout the supply chain and for the protections that it offered against theft and counterfeiting.
This was the 32nd year of the German Packaging Awards, which honors the most creative and innovative packaging, materials, technologies and graphics in the German packaging industry. Kautex, a Textron business, is based in Bonn, Germany.
The intelligent packaging system was developed by Kautex’s Industrial Products division, which is one of the world’s technology leaders in blowmolded plastic products. Packaging has been the backbone of the development for many years.
“With our intelligent packaging system, we here at Kautex are building on our proud tradition of developing blowmolding technology,” Studener said. “This is another milestone in products that we have developed over the years to find innovative solutions for the needs of our customers.”
In addition to its Industrial Products division, Kautex is the leading global automotive supplier of plastic fuel systems, selective catalytic reduction systems and clear vision systems for windshield and headlamp cleaning.
